The Blue Below
Still Breathes

The Blue Below Still Breathes approaches disappearance as transformation, a shift in visibility that reveals the pressures, absences, and structures shaping perception.

The installation consists of a 5 × 5 grid of thermochromic screenprints depicting a concrete wall. As viewers approach, sensors activate a randomized sequence of heating panels embedded behind the surface. Rising temperature causes the printed concrete image to fade, allowing a soft blue field to gradually emerge and disrupt the illusion of solidity. As the crowd disperses and attention withdraws, the panels cool; the blue recedes and the concrete pattern slowly returns.

This cyclical process of appearance and disappearance transforms the viewer from passive observer into active participant. By making the image contingent on proximity and time, the work foregrounds the instability of what appears permanent, inviting reflection on how visibility can shift under changing conditions.
